Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa

The Temporary Skill Shortage (Subclass 482) visa enables Australian employers to sponsor overseas workers to fill temporary skills gaps. It has three streams:

Short-Term Stream: For occupations on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List, up to 2 years stay.

Medium-Term Stream: For occupations on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List, up to 4 years stay—pathway to permanent residency.

Labour Agreement stream: Under the stream, businesses enter into an agreement with the federal government where the employer can negotiate the terms and conditions applicable to their particular circumstances.

The Short-term or Medium-term stream process involves three main stages:

Sponsorship: Businesses apply to become approved standard sponsors.

Nomination: Employers submit a nomination application specifying details of the role, skills required, and recruitment efforts.

Visa Application: Prospective visa holders apply and meet criteria like English proficiency and demonstrate at least 2 years of work experience in the occupation or related field.

For the Labour Agreement pathway, employers first negotiate an agreement with the government outlining proposed concessions. After a Labour agreement is in place, the employer can proceed with the nomination and visa application stages.
